Cast your mind back, back, back
Apparently we lost to the Italians in the second round .. i was there.
We played beautifully even though we rarely looked like scoring. Truth be said, though, neither did the Italians .. someone, i think it was Socrates, once said,"form is temporary, class is permanent .." - i say to Socrates, tell that to the Uruguayans, tell it to the Japanese, tell it to the Croatians ... we played a great game. we dominated .. i have never felt more content having supported a losing team in my life - and i have supported many a losing team ... i am reminded of a story i once heard of a tribe of South American Indians, who sent their men in teams out into the forest to chop down trees and run back to the village with logs on their backs ... the team who got back to the village first was not declared the winner - the villagers declared the team who carried the log the most beautifully as the winner - tonight, we carried the log beautifully ! In a lot of ways , we looked the team least likely to carry it back the quickest but jesus, we looked good carrying it ..
I am not going to read a word of how we were robbed, how we played the better but didn't win, how it wasn't fair we lost on the last kick of the game ... It must've gutted the players - but the team were magnificent.
That's how soccer is. The big teams will out. Soccer is like Shakespeare but easier to understand ... Before we are old , Australia will be one of those big teams ... We will remember this World Cup . And we will be splendid.
In the meantime, we should remember that we were very good looking spectators !
