What I did on my school holidays by Eloise Cotton
Well we're 5 days into leave so far, and its been a busy time. Petey is already finding me incredibly hard work, with all the 'doing' i insist on doing. I've had to allow him one rest day already, just so i don't wear him out too early, we've got over 2 weeks to go yet and i want him to last the distance! So far we've managed to fit all 'brows'in, some theatre (okay, it was only at the Roxbury...), a trip to Wentworth park dog races, some dancing at the South Sydney Leagues club...lots of variety. We've also hosted a parental dinner for Peteys mum and Aunty Nita, so far so good i think, 24hrs have passed and no signs of food poisoning. We even managed to exchange a few recipes...the kidney bean low GI brownies went down an absolute treat!
I would heartily recommend "Departures and Arrivals" at the Roxbury, its on for another couple of weeks i think, and is the 2nd in a series of pub theatre productions. Until Berti moved in I had no idea just how much theatre was going on in Sydney, she's pretty much out every night of the week seeing plays her friends are in. Incidentally her friend Caleb has written a play called "nailed" showing at the Griffin Theatre, so if anyone manages to find the blog via the various tricks petey has employed to get the blog noticed by search engines and trackback functions, go and see some theatre, particularly "nailed" and support our local talent. Also, say no to plastic bags....
What can i say about Wentworth park dogs...surprisingly there were some people under the age of 30, and only one old blog kicking chairs in disgust as he left broke and broken. Petey and i were attempting to capture some footage of the pooches racing, we have plans for a minor music video-type production, which honestly may never get off the ground. I suspect that scene won't make the cut either, 'cause those little doggies run too fast for our technology. I've never been to 'the dogs' before, but tell you what, and don't tell them bitches this, those greyhounds have the hugest buttocks you ever did see, they appear to be entirely powered by butt. Amazing.
Now, where are we up to? I'm already losing track of the days, gee its hard work being on holidays! For my birthday, Petey is learning to dance, 'cause as a little girl all i wanted was a boyfriend who could dance like Patrick Swayze...ooohh, isn't he dreamy? Anyone unfortunate enough to have seen 'shall we dance', the most recent Patrick Swayze dancing movie, could tell you that 'ol Swayze isn't actually looking too bad for his age, though 'dreamy' is probably stretching it a little. Anyway Petey has turned out to be quite the twinkle-toes, i think he could be a natural. The style of dancing is Ceroc, which is a modern Australian type of dance, i think a cross between swing and rock and roll....no, i checked the website, turns out its "a stylish blend of jive, dirty dancing and latin". We have a lot to learn! What i like about it is that there's a huge mix of people and ages. There were also quite a few other beginners and everyone was very friendly. Its not like when i did rock 'n roll dancing as a teenager, where everyone got all dressed up in their 50's gear and there was a whole new unfamilar level of 'cool' to explore. Back in those days i spent most of my time sitting on the sidelines, hoping Mr Smooth would ask me to dance...times have changed, this time i brought my own Mr Smooth! If only someone would tell teenage boys the value of dance, you can really wrap those ladies around your little finger if you have half a clue on the dancefloor, check this out, for the heads up on how to be Mr Smooth:
Mr Smooth
So its been a fabulous week of activities...and there is so much more left to do! I think i'm finally starting to see the attraction in living in a big smelly city. There's just so much going on all the time. We have plans to be real tourists these holidays, to go and see museums and galleries, more theatre, picnics in the park, long walks...that sort of thing. We've been making lists for weeks of things we want to see and do, i doubt we'll manage to fit it all in. If i have a spare second to post again, i'll do another review next week!
